Hobart, Tasmania
On Wednesday, we flew from Melbourne to Hobart, Tasmania. We will spend a few days on the island of Tasmania before returning to Melbourne.
We rented a car at the Hobart airport. So the first thing we did in Hobart was learn to drive on the left side of the road. (And by we I mean Joe.) It really is strange to be sitting in a car with the steering wheel on the right side, and trying to readjust to the rules of the road. Right turns have to cross lanes of traffic; left turns are easy. In addition to the differences on the road, the blinkers and the windshield wipers are reversed. When you signal to turn, you have to think about where the blinkers are. A few times Joe hit what he thought was the blinker without stopping to think about it, and ended up signaling his intent to turn by turning on the windshield wipers.
We drove to our hotel, checked in, and parked the car. Ricky and I grabbed a bit to eat while Joe headed for a tour of a local whiskey distillery. The tour involved an education on the different kinds of whiskey and how they're made. They're famous for their single malt whiskey. Lark Distilleries started here and it began an explosion of good quality whiskey distilleries on the island of Tasmania. Their award winning whiskey is known worldwide. There was an opportunity for tasting the different kinds of whiskeys at the end. After tasting the different kinds of whiskey, Joe did not attempt to drive, especially given the challenge of driving on the left side of the road. That's hard enough to do without any drinking involved.
We took a walk down to the waterfront area. Hobart has a beautiful waterfront. We walked around and enjoyed the harbor, the wharfs, piers, shops, cafes, etc. Here are some typical photos from the waterfront area of Hobart.

Crayfish (crawfish?) in Tasmania? |
Since we had gotten up around 4:30 this morning for an early flight, we all decided we had enough of walking and headed back to the hotel. We hope to get a good night's sleep and to explore more of Tasmania in the next few days.
Don’t let Joe steer you wrong driving on wrong side of the road, much less eating crayfish instead of crawfish!
