Gabby the Yabbie

On Tuesday, we said goodbye to Melbourne and headed for our next adventure - a drive through the Snowy Mountains along the edge of Kosciuszko National Park - and eventually to Canberra, where we will arrive tomorrow (Wednesday). Along the way, we enjoyed some more of the beautiful Australian countryside.







In the small town of Corryong, we stopped to take pictures of the Man From Snowy River Museum. The Man From Snowy River is a movie from 1982 that was filmed in Victoria, Australia. I remember seeing the movie years ago and was curious that there was a museum, so we stopped to take some pictures. Corryong is a very nice, picturesque town.

Shortly after going through Corryong, we crossed the Murray River, which is the border between the Australian states of Victoria and New South Wales, and is Australia's longest river. Curiously, along the banks of the Murray River was a large metal crawfish that appears to be crawling out of the ground. Although here, it likely wouldn't be called a crawfish, but a crayfish, or even a yabbie. The crawfish apparently goes by the name of Gabby the Yabbie.

Near the end of the day, we started getting into the Snowy Mountains and seeing some beautiful mountain scenery.

    Oh yes Who could forget Jim Craig , The Man from snowy River !
    And now we have a new one to remember Gabby the yabbie!
    I bet that was a great museum !

Fire and Ice

I stated in the previous post that the fun begins on Jan. 12. However, we had a little "fun" before actually getting to the Australia part of the trip. Our drive from Pennsylvania to Atlanta was a little precarious. We drove through a blizzard in Virginia, and on icy roads in North Carolina. Then when we got to Atlanta, we watched the forecast for Friday - the day we were supposed to fly out of Atlanta - call for ice and snowy mix. The ice and snow was coming from Dallas - the layover where we were to catch our plane to Sydney. Wow! You'd think once we got to the south, we wouldn't have to worry about cold, snowy, icy weather. NOT SO! I guess to get to summer in Australia you have to go through winter in the southern US. The "fun" continued: Late Thursday night, we received notice from the airline that our flight on Friday had been cancelled. All flights out of the Atlanta airport were cancelled on Friday. Mount Wellington

On Sunday, Joe and I visited a local bakery down the street from the hotel called Queens Bakery. They had an absolutely amazing assortment of pastries including croissants, donuts, muffins, cruffins (croissant and muffin), rolls, etc. The almond croissants were so amazing. They were huge, with whole almonds baked into them and had a cream filling. They must be really popular because they had a sign saying that each customer was limited to two almond croissants. We had a really great breakfast to start our day. After breakfast, the three of us (Joe, Ricky, and me) took a drive to the top of Mount Wellington. This mountain forms the backdrop of Hobart and is a very popular place for hiking, biking, or just driving up to enjoy the view. The road leading up to the mountain is very curvy and steep in places, very narrow, and sometimes with steep drop-offs and little to no barriers.
